Are commercial refrigerators energy efficient?

Want to reduce your business’s carbon footprint?

Looking for ways you can save a few pennies on your energy bill?

From watching your water consumption and switching off unused appliances to investing in energy-efficient equipment – there are many surefire ways to reduce energy consumption in your commercial kitchen.

But what about essential appliances like commercial refrigerators – one of, if not the most vital pieces of equipment in any kitchen, are they energy efficient?

In this post, our commercial refrigeration experts here at J&M Refrigeration reveal the answers to all of your questions.

So, are commercial refrigerators energy efficient?

Most modern commercial refrigerators are designed with a range of innovative technologies to increase energy efficiency in your kitchen.

Just one of these is intelligent airflow systems.

This helps to maintain a consistent temperature inside your refrigerator – no matter how many times the door is opened and closed. Which – believe it or not – can generate significant savings.

Other factors that can impact the efficiency of a commercial refrigeration system include the choice and thickness of insulation materials and the type of refrigerant (the fluid used in the air conditioning systems and heat pumps) used.

How do I check if my commercial refrigerator is energy efficient?

The simplest way to see if your commercial refrigerator is energy efficient is to look at its energy label – which is usually located on the front of your appliance.

A new energy labelling process was introduced in January 2021, and all commercial refrigerators are now labelled from A+++ to G, with the former being the higher (or most) energy-efficient and the latter the least.

The label also displays key information about annual energy consumption (a numeric rating displayed in kWh/year) and total recommended capacity.

Can I increase the energy efficiency of my commercial refrigerator?

Absolutely!

There are many things you can do to increase the efficiency of your commercial refrigerator, including:

• Don’t overload your fridge
Overfilling your commercial refrigerator can restrict the airflow – which is not only bad news for its contents, but your energy bills, too.
With the condenser coil working overtime to try and keep everything cool, your fridge is using way more electricity than it needs to – so make sure there’s plenty of space inside your unit.

• Make sure to clean the condenser coil
To ensure the condenser coil can function efficiently, it should be cleaned once every three months to prevent the build-up of dust and debris.
This will help stop your unit from overheating.

• Remove and clean the door seals and check them for wear and tear
A leaky door seal can increase your energy consumption, which is why it’s so important to inspect and clean it regularly .
