Whether you’re a head chef, restaurant owner or café manager – if you’re in charge of purchasing the equipment needed to operate your business, you’ll likely be well aware of how much of an investment a commercial refrigerator can be. An absolute necessity in the catering industry, but one which requires maintenance and upkeep to keep it going strong, ensuring that your commercial refrigeration is in tip top condition should be a number one priority.
Here at JAM Refrigeration, we appreciate the importance of refrigeration, whether it be for the hospitality sector, for healthcare or for food retail. That’s why we offer a 24/7 maintenance service to ensure that day or night, if your commercial refrigerator is presenting an issue, we can help.
But – how can you tell the difference between a refrigerator which needs a little upkeep and one that is past the point of no return? With over 30 years’ experience in the commercial refrigeration industry, we’re experts in identifying issues with refrigeration. Whilst we have seen a huge range of problems occur, the general rule of thumb is that if you’re coming up against the same issues time and time again, then the chances are that it could well be time for a refrigeration replacement.
Below, are four tell-tale signs that your commercial refrigeration system may be ready for a full upgrade.
- Persistent frost build-up
Ice or frost build-up can occur for a number of reasons, and not all of which necessarily mean that you need to replace your entire refrigerator. Sometimes, frost build-up can happen as a result of a faulty door seal, which can be picked up quickly if you opt for regular routine maintenance. However, if you do have your commercial refrigerator regularly serviced and still find that frost build-up is reoccurring, the chances are that the system is faulty and isn’t cooling properly.
If this is the case, purchasing a brand-new refrigerator could ultimately be less expensive than having to call for regular repairs.
- Spoiled produce
Any food which requires refrigeration will spoil eventually, but if you’re finding that produce is letting off unpleasant odours every time you open the door, it’s highly likely there’s something wrong with your commercial refrigerator.
Food that spoils too often, whether it be fresh or processed, is a clear sign that your refrigerator isn’t cooling as it should be. If you suspect this to be the case, you can carry out some of your own investigations, such as listening out for the low hum which signifies the compressor is running. Other things you can do to try and combat the issue is upholding regular thorough cleans, every 90 days or so.
However, if you find the issue persists, it’s likely that your commercial refrigerator has given up the ghost.
- A very noisy refrigerator
All refrigerators make a noise, whether domestic or commercial. However, if you find that your commercial refrigerator is particularly noisy or making uncommon sounds such as clicking – then you’re likely faced with a damaged or faulty refrigerator motor.
This may not necessarily be the case, as a damaged condenser fan can also be known to cause unusual noises, and this issue can usually be easily rectified by qualified repair engineers. However, a damaged motor may be less straightforward and can often mean that the refrigerator needs replacing.
- Old age
Depending on the size, make and model of your commercial refrigerator you should be looking at an average lifespan of around ten years with regular maintenance. Of course, this can change based on how much it is used and how much wear and tear is sustained. With this in mind, it’s not uncommon that we see a lot of refrigerators which have been in situ for many years and have seen a dramatic decrease in performance.
This is to be expected with any piece of equipment, and even with the best upkeep and maintenance, eventually you will need to replace your commercial refrigerator as a result of old age.
